The Choice for Many: Skip Meals, Turn off Heating, Miss Bill Payments

We are all feeling the pinch of higher costs, but for those already struggling the cost-of-living crisis is causing people to have to make impossible decisions between bills, food and heating and leaving them with no option but to use a foodbank.

The crisis is impacting the whole Horsham community and as a result Horsham District Foodbank has seen an increase in the number of new clients, families and refugees being hosted locally needing support. It only takes an unexpected expense, illness or a change in circumstance to drive people already on the brink to need support.

In March Horsham District Foodbank fed 434 people, and this increased in April to 617 people. It has also seen an increase in the number of families needing school holiday meals. Sadly, the future looks bleak with a further rise in inflation predicted, as well as fuel and food increases. Horsham Matters expects to see many more residents from all walks of life needing support in the months to come and high demand over the summer school holidays.

Recent reports show that people are falling further into debt to pay for essentials. Horsham Matters Network and Campaigns Lead Amalia Lovett says: “When someone reaches out to us for support, we aim to provide a holistic approach where they are offered household budgeting advice, benefits check and debt advice. We can also offer support with gas and electricity. We have started offering counselling as we have seen how the cost-of-living crisis has triggered mental health problems for many people in our community. However, even with this support, we still see too many people not being able to make ends meet in this current crisis.”

The UK government has announced further funding to help the most vulnerable households deal with the rising cost of essentials but Horsham Matters, along with a network of more than 1,200 Trussell Trust foodbanks, believes an investment in the social security system is needed to protect people from further debt and destitution.

Due to the growing need for support, Horsham Matters has launched a cost-of-living crisis fundraising campaign. It needs your support to ensure it can meet the needs of the growing number of people suffering hardship in our community.
