Sussex Green Living have had a Great Year

Looking back over 2021, it seems Sussex Green Living has established itself as a valuable part of Horsham life, thanks to a dedicated band of volunteers and we are really proud of what has been achieved.

Once a month we ran (and still do) our Sussex Green Ideas Zoom events with talks and a chance to share events, local news and eco ideas. In 2021 we ran 12, the meeting is on the 3rd Wednesday each month.

15th May the project we had been working on throughout last winter was launched in Horsham Market, our “Inspiration Eco Station” 1974 retrofitted milk float. Days later it went out as part of our first “Bright New Future Roadshow” to Stedham Primary School, where the children enjoyed a carousel of outdoor activities on the common and woodland next to the school, concluding with the entire school performing the song, ‘Be the Change’ in the playground as parents were arriving to collect them. Many other schools enjoyed the roadshow including Bolnore School Haywards Heath, St Marys School Pulborough, Kingslea School Horsham, St Bede’s Pre School Eastbourne and 8 school eco councils at an event in Brighton in partnership with Rampion Visitors Centre and Sussex Wildlife Trust.

Our Youth Eco Forum (aged 12–18) publishing 4 online e-zines, hosting fortnightly zooms (they still do) and ran their outdoor education day called “Beyond Be-Leaf” day for young people from London, Tanbridge House and Christ’s Hospital schools. In 2021 we worked with a total of 24 schools and over 1500 pupils aged 5–18.

The Inspiration Eco Station attended 19 events in Horsham District, including Cowfold, Storrington, Billingshurst, Henfield, Storrington, Southwater, Pulborough, Amberley and Horsham.

On 25th September we launched our once-a-month Sussex Green Hub which offers a welcoming space at the United Reformed Church in Horsham just off West Street near Wilko. This collaborative community event includes our Horsham Repair Café, bottle refills, recycling, carbon clinic, Transition Horsham, Eco Churches, Horsham Community Fridge and a café run by the URC.

Monthly e-newsletters have been distributed and we enjoy a wide variety of contributors writing for the County Times weekly SGL column, from nutritionists to gardeners, fashion buffs to architects, who are all able to offer insights and small simple steps that each one of us can take to play our part in mitigating the climate and ecological emergency.

Last, but definitely not least, tonnes of single use plastic continue to be recycled by volunteers in 17 villages and Horsham town, preventing them from going to landfill or incinerator. Instead, the materials are recycled raising hundreds of pounds through TerraCycle and inkjet cartridge recycling. The money is split equally between the Air Ambulance, William Penn School and Sussex Green Living.
