“Life needs more Beer and Barbecues”

This year has all been about getting back to normal – and that is indeed the case for the Probus Club of Horsham Arun. Nearly 40 Club members and guests met in September for their annual BBQ at the White Horse pub in Maplehurst on a day of mixed sunshine and showers. And the Club well and truly lived up to the saying.

As usual, we were treated to the fine hospitality and food offered by Simon and Beth – a superb selection of barbecued meat and salads and beautifully prepared, and highly calorific puddings.

The barbecue was given an evocative and memorable touch of celebration when we discovered that the day was also the Diamond Wedding anniversary of one of our member couples.

The event marked the beginning of the club’s Autumn programme which will culminate in our Christmas lunch celebration at the Roffey Park Institute. Leading up to Christmas we will be having a ‘restaurant raid’ where we take over a local restaurant’s dining room for our sole use - great fun and a chance to enjoy good food and chat. We are also visiting the Museum of London and are having a trip to a local theatre.

Our Events Committee is just getting its head around planning for 2023. On the list of ‘possibles’ are local castles – Leeds, Walmer, and Pevensey – the home of Charles Darwin, Exbury Gardens, Salisbury (Cathedral and the home of Edward Heath), a Club holiday......... the list goes on but we will have a 2023 programme that suits the many and varied interests of our members and their partners. Interspersed among these events, we have our monthly meetings and lunch at Horsham Cricket Club and an informal monthly pub lunch organised by one of our members rejoicing in the title of our ‘Chief Victualler’.
